Amarillo Police have issued an official statement about the removal of a vehicle from the lake in Thompson Park that took place yesterday afternoon in Amarillo.  The vehicle was found by radio controlled boat operators, who only noticed it when their boats struck the vehicle.  The vehicle's antenna was sticking out of the water, and that's all that could be seen.  The circumstances that led to the 2002 Ford Explorer being submerged in the lake aren't clear at this time.  To add to that, the vehicle was not reported stolen, and they are unable to get in contact with the owner at this time.

"On Sunday 04/06/2014, at 1:18 PM, officers were sent to meet the Amarillo Fire Department at Thompson Park Lake on a vehicle submerged in the lake. The Amarillo Police Department Underwater Recovery Team responded to the scene.  The AFD fire fighters were flagged down by radio controlled boat operators that found the vehicle when their boats struck it.  They then saw the antenna extending above the water and determined that the vehicle was submerged there.  Members of the APD Dive Team responded and checked it for evidence as well as conditions permitted before attaching a cable and having it pulled from the water.  The green 2002 Ford Explorer is not listed as a stolen vehicle.  At this point, investigators have not located the owner to determine the circumstances leading up to it being there."
