Walmart and other retailers including United here in Amarillo are ceasing their 24-hour store hours early. Walmart and United will close at 11 pm effective immediately due to a surge of products due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

Certain grocery and cleaning items have been sold out across the country leaving retailers to limit the number of items a customer can buy. Items such as paper towels, toilet paper, disinfecting cleaners and hand sanitizers have been sold out for days. Food items such as bread and milk, as well as instant type meals, pasta and even beef, pork and chicken are in low supply.

A visit Sunday Walmart on Coulter was greeted by empty shelves and lines of shoppers trying to get essential items.

Walmart stated the following in a blogpost by Dacona Smith, executive vice president and chief operating officer about shutting down stores early:

"This will help ensure associates are able to stock the products our customers are looking for and to perform cleaning and sanitizing.  As we make this change, associates will continue to work the hours and shifts they are scheduled, and our supply chain and trucking fleet will continue to move products and deliver to stores on their regular schedules"
