Whatever Happened to the Jesus Christ Is Lord Travel Center?

Amarillo is rife with landmarks, tourist attractions, and what some may consider to be plain old tourist traps. Recently, I started wondering what in the world ever happened to the Jesus Christ Is Lord Travel Center?

You've seen it. I've seen it. We've all seen it on I-40 as you make your way into Amarillo. It sat just off of the interstate, proselytizing the masses traveling to unknown places.

Nowadays, it's operating as a different truck stop company. Most of the Evangelical proclamations have been covered.

Considering the current status of the Jesus Christ Is Lord Travel Center, I can't go and take a look around inside to see what type of souvenir items graced the shelves. I imagine there had to be more than the usual Texas themed fridge magnets and key-chains with your name on them.

Surely there had to be some kind of mashup between Jesus and the Lone Star State in the form of a coffee cup or travel mug. Maybe Christ standing in a field of bluebonnets, or something.

Jesus Christ Is Lord Travel Center Had What You'd Expect, Even a Chapel

I did come across a website that features reports on various truck stops across the country. Jesus Christ Is Lord Travel Center has a report of its own.

According to the report, it was a 24-hour truck stop that featured the usual showers, lounge, and coffee shop/deli/restaurant you expect to see. It also had scales, offered minor maintenance services, overnight parking, and WiFi.

Of course the Jesus Christ Is Lord Travel Center also had its very own chapel available for travelers to use for their religious and spiritual needs. Did it also have the "Jesus is Lord...Not a Swear Word" messaging inside?

Expensive Gas and Scripture Verses

On the Roadside America website, one person commented on how not only did you have the signage and the message painted on all of the trucks, but there were scriptures everywhere. There were even scriptures on the gas pumps.

That person did comment that gas was more expensive there than at the stops nearby.

Why Did The Jesus Christ Is Lord Travel Center Close?

I did a fair amount of digging on the web to see if I could find any reliable information as to what eventually caused the Jesus Christ Is Lord Travel Center to close.

Unfortunately, I wasn't able to find much. I've heard several theories, but nothing solid. All we can do is remember the time a truck stop tried to outdo Groom when it comes to massive road side monuments to the Son of God.

The Eerie Abandoned Puckett Place Apartments of Amarillo

The Puckett Place apartments at 3447 Amherst St. have been a vacant and in disrepair for well over a decade. The building has finally been slated for renovation and at long last, Puckett Place will see a new life.

In the meantime, here's a glimpse at the strange and derelict beauty that is the abandoned Puckett Place.

The Abandoned St. Anthony's Hospital on Amarillo Boulevard

The 119-year-old abandoned hospital is a fascinating place for any who are lucky enough to be granted the chance to explore.

The sprawling building saw thousands of Amarillo's citizens inside its halls daily, all the the way until it was shuttered in 2001. But there are still incredible artifacts of the all-too-recent past tucked away in the nooks and crannies of the old St. Anthony.

The explorer who took these photographs gave the following information:

"Many rooms were left untouched, we found patient files, old prescriptions, a blood transfusion machine from the 60s, and microscopic slides of breast cancer from the 70s and 80s. I put one picture in here of some heart scans so you can see the dates and diagnosis of the patient, but marked out the patient’s names of course. During a time when mental illness was not understood, 76 exorcisms were documented to have been performed between 1909 and 1931."
