I had to learn the hard way this weekend that with the hot summer weather we're having, you need to be sure and take care of yourself while doing yard work. A six pack and some sunglasses aren't enough to protect you from the heat.

Wear Sunscreen

I didn't wear a single drop of sunscreen. I wish I had. It hurts to walk, wear pants, lay in bed, take a shower; you name it. Wear plenty of sunscreen, and reapply as needed. Especially if you plan on spending several hours outside.

Wear Work Appropriate Clothing


I opted for shorts and a Stoney Larue t-shirt with the sleeves cut off. Bad idea. They did nothing to protect me from the sun. Wear a work appropriate shirt with long sleeves, and pants. Protect yourself from those painful, harmful rays.

Take Frequent Breaks


Once I started, I didn't stop. I worked until dark Saturday and Sunday. All of that time in the sun left me feeling sick and exhausted. Not to mention, incredibly sunburned. You should take frequent breaks to cool off.

Stay Hydrated With Water, Not Beer

I love grabbing a six pack and jumping on the riding mower for a chilled out morning of mowing. However, it can really do a nasty number on the body if you're out in the heat for long periods of time with nothing but "your brand" to hydrate you. There is no replacement for water. Good ol' H2O is the way to go.

Pick A Better Time To Do Your Work Than The Heat Of The Day


Seriously. Start early in the morning and then take a break when the heat is at its peak. You can also wait until the evening to get started. If you have a big project, split it up in different days. No one is going to judge you because you took a little extra time to get your backyard cabana together.

The good news is that all of the tiki torches are in place, my picnic area is set up, and I built the world's smallest fire pit out of some left over bricks we had laying around. Just wish I had felt well enough to enjoy it all.
