When you think of Amarillo, what's the first thing that comes to mind? My guess is that the most common answers are wind, coffee shops, convenience stores, and dust. All of those would be very fitting answers, and every one of them would be correct.

There's one that's missing from this list, however, and it's EXTREMELY fitting, especially these days. That would be road construction. For as long as I've lived in Amarillo (5 years), there has ALWAYS been some kind of major road construction going on. Get ready for another project.

Georgia Street Widening

The time has come for yet another major project in Amarillo, but it's aiming to really improve some things that need to be done. However, it's not going to be a short project, so you can expect some issues and delays for a while now.

The project is covering a 1.5-mile stretch and has been slowly being worked on since May 2025, but it's reaching the point where it's going to cause closures and issues for you on your commute, so you need to be prepared for detours and slowdowns.

What Are They Working On

The basis of the project is to widen Georgia St. from Hollywood Road to Burk Lane, including some utility relocations, as well as improving drainage in the area. Starting tomorrow, Thursday, February 19, Georgia St. will be closed from Loop 335 to just south of Daytona. That includes access to the intersection of Tampa Bay and Georgia Street.

The entire project is slated for completion in November 2028, so yes, this is a long-term project that will continue to create closures you'll need to pay attention to, and we'll keep you updated as we get those notifications.
