Sick, Dead Birds Found Across Amarillo as Bird Flu Tests Begin
It's that time of year in Amarillo when we are absolutely inundated with birds around the city. They're loud, obnoxious, paint everything white (you know what I mean), and can create a bit of havoc.
This year, however, we're starting to see some of these birds become sick, and some are winding up dead. While this can be a bit unsettling to see, it comes with other things that we need to be aware of.
Birds Being Tested For Bird Flu
One of the main concerns when it comes to things like this is the potential of bird flu being introduced to the city. Because of the number of sick and dead birds, Amarillo Public Health has cautioned people about the potential for bird flu.
They have taken some of the sick and dead birds and tested them for bird flu. Amarillo Public Health anticipates having the results back next week. If they test positive, it'll be the second confirmed case of bird flu in Texas this year.
How To Avoid Getting Bird Flu
The main way you catch bird flu is by dealing with the sick or dead animal yourself. They caution you not to touch the bird or move it if you can avoid it. Calling animal control is your best bet.
If, for some reason, you need to come in contact with the animal, it is suggested that you use protective equipment. Items such as a mask, gloves, rubber boots, and coveralls are all recommended. Even after you've covered yourself in those items, it is recommended that you wash your hands thoroughly after removing the bird.
