Well, it's been a long road to find the next Amarillo Chief of Police, but the search has officially come to an end. Back in late November, we were introduced to the three finalists for the position, and we had a feeling the decision would come before the end of the year.

Thomas Hover, interim Chief Jimmy Johnson, and Greg Stevens were the three finalists who were announced, all of them very decorated, with each one having at least two decades of service. One of those three will indeed be the next Chief of Police in Amarillo.

Welcome, Chief Thomas Hover

The search committee ultimately landed on Thomas Hover and extended him an offer to become the next Chief of Police in Amarillo, and he gladly accepted the offer.

“I am deeply humbled and honored to have been selected as the next Police Chief for the City of Amarillo,” Hover said, and continued, “I am grateful to the city leadership for their confidence and trust, and I look forward to serving the Amarillo community."

Hover was previously with the Irving Police Department, where he oversaw field operations and specialized bureaus.

Amarillo City Officials React

One thing that's an important note here is that Amarillo city officials don't have a formal role in selecting the next Chief. While they keep abreast of the proceedings, they do not have a formal say in the hiring. However, it does seem officials are pleased with the selection.

Assistant City Manager Andrew Freeman oversaw the search on behalf of city management and said his experience and leadership approach were exactly what they were seeking. Mayor Cole Stanley also stated he was happy with the process and eventual selection.

Hover now has to complete a background investigation as well as a confirmation vote on January 13, 2026, in which it is anticipated the vote will pass and Hover will become the Chief of Police for Amarillo.

What Is A Day Like In Texas Prisons? A View From Both Sides Of The Bars

Have you ever wondered what life inside a Texas prison is really like? I asked friends who are correction officers and folks who have volunteered at jails. I also asked former inmates, and browsed forums and articles with current and former inmates. Put all together, it paints what I hope is a fairly accurate picture of daily prison life in Texas.
