Amarillo Police officers were dispatched to a motor vehicle collision at the 26th St exit and I-27 around 6:10am this morning.  A female driver had ran out of gas, and some good citizens were helping her out and pushing her car off the highway and out of traffic's way.  During this, a man driving a PT Cruiser was exiting I-27 and struck the Chevy Impala that was being pushed by the group of people.  Helen Cardenas was caught between the 2 vehicles when they collided and was transported to the hospital with life threatening injuries.

"On August 22, 2013 at approximately 6:09 am Officers were dispatched to Motor Vehicle Collision at the 26th St Exit for northbound I-27. Upon their arrival they discovered a 2006 Chevy Impala driven by Jamikea Gormany, BF,18 of Amarillo was being pushed off I-27 by several subjects and was on the exit ramp. The car had previously run out of gas. A 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser driven by Christopher Shawn Welch, WM, 32 of Amarillo was exiting I-27. The Chrysler struck the Chevy. Helen Cardenas, WF, 37 of Amarillo was caught between the two cars. She was taken to a local area hospital with life threatening injuries."

The incident is being investigated by the Traffic Investigation Squad of the Amarillo Police Dept.
