Today is International Women's Day.  A day to celebrate the achievements of women throughout the world.

International Women's Day is also a day to bring awareness to women's issues.  Issues like gender equality, violence and abuse against women, and reproductive rights.

Today, I think we celebrate the strength of women.  It's a time to lift women up, and recognize their achievements and efforts.

Today, I want to celebrate strong, successful and empowering women in Amarillo.

Beth Duke

Beth Duke is one of the strongest women I know.  She has made such a huge difference in Amarillo.   Her influence has helped build Downtown Amarillo into what it is now.   Anytime Beth gets knocked down, she dusts herself off and keeps going.  She is an example of what young women today should strive for, driven and humble.  Two things that normally don't go together, but Beth makes it look easy.

Melodie Graves

I have never met a woman with more passion to better her community.  Melodie has made it her mission to improve the North Heights Area and bring great things.  Not only that, she has a passion in helping the students that come through her office at Amarillo College.

Mayor Ginger Nelson

This woman has a passion for Amarillo.  She is able to stand up to adversity.  This woman is the target for public scrutiny.   You may or may not agree with the decisions that have been made during her time in office, but she does hold a office that deserves a bit of respect.  As a woman, she is treated differently than a man who would hold the same office.  I respect her for her success and her drive to make Amarillo better.  I respect her for being available to the citizens of Amarillo whenever they have a concern.  Most of all I respect her for holding her head high and doing her best when others always want to beat her down.

DJ Stubben

I like to refer to DJ as the Energizer Bunny.  DJ is up before the sun and doesn't stop until long after the sun has set.  She always has a smile on her face and she doesn't know a stranger.   DJ knew me way before I knew her.  She has created a successful business and is always moving.  She is always on a mission to help businesses and non-profits and of course Amarillo grow.  I don't know how she made it through COVID distancing because she loves to give hugs.  She is always available with a helping hand.  I cannot imaging Amarillo without DJ Stubben.  If you say thank you, always expect to hear, "You're Welcome Pardner."

These are just a small selection of strong women in Amarillo, but we are surrounded with strong women daily.

Take the time today to lift up a woman who always strives to do her best and to be successful (Hint: That's every woman).

LOOK: Milestones in women's history from the year you were born

Women have left marks on everything from entertainment and music to space exploration, athletics, and technology. Each passing year and new milestone makes it clear both how recent this history-making is in relation to the rest of the country, as well as how far we still need to go. The resulting timeline shows that women are constantly making history worthy of best-selling biographies and classroom textbooks; someone just needs to write about them.

Scroll through to find out when women in the U.S. and around the world won rights, the names of women who shattered the glass ceiling, and which country's women banded together to end a civil war.

The Five Beautiful Murals Added to Downtown Amarillo

The HooDoo Mural Festival of 2021 means there are five more gorgeous works of art that can be seen in Downtown Amarillo. These gorgeous splashes of color and creativity are a sight to behold.

This Home in the Bivins Neighborhood is Fit For Royalty

This a gorgeous home in Amarillo's historic Bivins neighborhood that was listed through JT & Jamie Haynes of Triangle Realty, LLC for just under $400k.

If you ask us, that's a steal for a home that size, location, and the extensive remodeling already done. It should be no surprise that it was very quickly snatched up off the market. But still....this dreamy English Tudor home is undoubtedly one of our favorites!

Take a look...
