Every year thousands of spectators come out to see if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow.  So are we going to have six more weeks of winter or will we be blessed with an early spring?

As wonderful as an early spring would be, Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow.  So this means we will have six more weeks of winter, right?  Not so fast.

As fun as it is to think that a groundhog can predict the weather by the appearance of his shadow it isn't always right.  To be honest, the weather predictor is usually more wrong than right.

According to the National Climatic Data Center, there is no correlation between Phil's predictions and the actual weather.

The well-fed, groundhog also has a record for seeing his shadow. Ever since the tradition began in 1887, Phil (and his ancestors) saw their shadows 99 times, while predicting an early spring only 16 times. There was no record for nine of the years.

So as fun as it is to see the groundhog every year, it isn't usually accurate.  Here is to six more weeks of winter, maybe.
