Every now and then I get sent messages on issues that people would like advice on. Now, I'm not the best person to give advice, but I have found that when we blog about stories in our city, people will comment on their own past experiences or their own opinions. Here's a story for you to comment on. A local dad was banned from going on his sons first school field trip to the fair, due to his background check. Here's what the father sent me:

Hacker we need your help or maybe the listeners advice:

Today we were on our way to our sons field trip. He is in Pre-K and so today was a big day for all of us. Well when we arrived to the school and about to board the bus the principle stopped us and told my husband (father), didn't meet the qualifications to attend the field trip. My husband asked "why?".. The principle did not know the reason why he just said that the people that make the decision said it was due to his background. The principle then asked my husband .. "Is there anything that would keep you from qualifying?" My husband said "yeah I do have a background but that was a long time ago.." The principle said yes that's what it might be then. So my husband said "Well is there any way to find out why exactly they are not letting me go?" The principle then said give me a second and I will call to see if they can waive this so you can go. After awhile my husband was notified that he wasn't able to attend the field trip with his son due to something on his record. The principle then asked me (mother) "Have you filled out that paper to attend field trips?" I said "no not yet I do have a misdemeanor on my background.." He said well go fill out the paper and we can see if yours goes through.. So we did ,and then the principle called my husband back and said yeah unfortunately we wouldn't be able to do anything right now.  The principle then told me (mother) if I wanted to go I can go just as long as I stay with my son and not help the other kids. The principle authorized me going on the spot knowing that I had a misdemeanor on my record, but would not allow my husband to go!

My question is do you think it was right for the principle to ban from any field trips my son goes on? If feel like I was profiled and discriminated due to my background. I am not a pedophile but felt like I was treated like one. I just wanted yours or your listeners thoughts..."
