H-E-B has once again announced expansion with the opening of a new store in Texas, and I'll just kill the rumors now, no, it's not in Amarillo.

It's in yet another city that I'd say 98% of Texans have never heard of or even knew existed. Melissa, Texas, is the latest place in Texas to get their very own H-E-B.

Melissa is a town of a touch over 23,000 people and is 45 minutes north of Dallas. Now, we understand the need for the smaller towns to have grocery stores and everything, but how does a city that small land a brand new H-E-B?

Why Can't Amarillo Get An H-E-B

The main thing we continue to hear about Amarillo not getting an H-E-B is that we need a distribution center closer to the city in order for that to happen. I decided to Google where the H-E-B distribution centers were.

Shockingly, Google Maps shows the closest distribution center is in Temple, TX. That's definitely not close to Amarillo, but is it really that close to Lubbock, which DOES have H-E-B?

Who Else Is Getting An H-E-B In Texas

This is the wild thing. According to the H-E-B Newsroom site, there are EIGHT more H-E-Bs that are currently planned to be built, or are already being built.

So, which cities are getting them? Robson Ranch, Hillcrest, Forney, Murphy & Mid-Cities, Irving, Rockwall, Prosper, and the aforementioned Melissa. What's the one thing they all have in common?

The majority of these cities are in or around distribution centers.

Will They Ever Build A Distribution Center Closer To Amarillo

That's an answer I wish I had for you. We don't know, and we may never know.

They are building distribution centers on top of new stores, but those are being built at a slower rate than the stores themselves. Whether or not we'll see one closer to Amarillo remains to be seen.

Teeny Tiny Towns of the Texas Panhandle

Don't blink! You just might miss these TINY towns that are dotted around the Texas Panhandle.

Some of these are unincorporated communities and some of these are just plain ol' small!

Either way, these teensy weensy tiny towns and their populations will make you say "wow" (and maybe even squint and say "that's all!?"). Check them out:

The Somewhat Small Towns of the Texas Panhandle

Say what now? Somewhat small?

That's right. These are the towns that seem massive when compared to teensy weensie two-stoplight towns like Pringle (30) or Kerrick (25), but they're definitely not on the same level as cities like White Deer or Panhandle....much less Amarillo.

Buckle up! We've got a places to go and towns to see! These populations are well over 100, but way less than 1000.

All aboard the Somewhat Small Texas Panhandle Towns tour!
