Have you ever wondered why we make such a big deal out of Friday the 13th? No, not the movie franchise, I am talking about the days on our calendar. After doing some research I was surprised to learn just how long this day of so-called bad luck has been around. It has a history that dates back almost as far as history itself!

It is believed that the superstition of Friday the 13th dates back to the Last Supper. It was attended by 13 people - Jesus Christ and his 12 disciples, and took place on Maundy Thursday, the night before his crucifixion by Roman soldiers on Good Friday. The number 13 is thus associated with Judas Iscariot, Christ’s betrayer, and is thought to be imperfect when compared with 12, which is the number of months in a calendar year.

Another theory is the that the day and date has to do with King Philip IV of France arresting hundreds of Knights Templar on Friday the 13th, in October of 1307. Many of the knights were burned at the stake in Paris for worshiping false idols and moral and financial corruption. One of the victims is said to have shouted a curse from the stake, ensuring that every Friday the 13th would be bad luck for everyone, forever.

Do you view Friday the 13th as unlucky?
