This rumor has been around for a while, and it is true that in his youth, Pope Benedict XVI was a part of "Hitler Youth."  But times were different when he was a young'n, it was required.  What are you gonna do?  His choice was most likely, be a member, or be dead!

So why am I bringing up old news?  Well because Susan Sarandon decided to bring it up, I'm just reiterating what she said.  Because that's what I'm good at doing! (TMZ)

During an interview at the Hamptons Film Festival, Sarandon was talking about sending the pope a copy of the book, “Dead Man Walking,” when she clarified .... “The last one [Pope John Paul II], not this Nazi one we have now.”

When interviewer Bob Balaban expressed disapproval, Sarandon reportedly said the Nazi comment AGAIN -- drawing laughter from the audience.

The Pope's PR people acknowledged that Benedict WAS a member of the Hitler Youth as a boy, a requirement at the time for German boys his age -- but the rep insists he had no "active participation" in the group.

Hey it's the past, and Susan is pretty irrelevant so I'm guessing she said it just to get some shock factor.  Catholics everywhere now hate her guts.  And Susan wont respond when reached for comments.  Oh yeah, she screwed up and she knows it!  I think it's safe to say that if we all had our past held against us, we'd all be a looked at as some sort of Nazi.
