Dasher Diary: Navigating Amarillo Flash Floods For A Final Delivery
The one thing about Amarillo weather is that it can change in an instant. Nothing was more proof of that than a couple of weeks ago on that Sunday afternoon when the skies just seemed to open up.
You remember that day, right? I was out DoorDashing and I was actually on my final delivery when I noticed the sky starting to look a little iffy. I sent my daughter a text to bring a few things into the garage, just in case.
The Sudden Shift in Amarillo Skies
The funny thing is that as fast as the weather can change it can also decide to split right over our city and we end up with nothing. You just never know. So, as I was heading to the last house, I had a delivery when the raindrops started to come.
I was only a few minutes away from the house, but that was all it took. It was a torrential downpour by the time I arrived on her street. I ended up passing the house I needed because I couldn't see anything.
Trapped by Flash Flooding on the Street
She had messaged me, but I already knew. I let her know it was pouring and I might sit in my car for a few minutes to see if the rain would lighten up. The food was safely in my trunk in an insulated bag, so that was another obstacle.
I would have to get out in the rain and hail and go to my trunk. Before I could even process it, the street was already flash-flooding, with rushing water nearly up to my calves
The Creative Backseat Cargo Rescue
I messaged the customer and told her I was going to try to access the food from the backseat. Squeezing through my compact car's interior to reach the cargo area turned into a much bigger wrestling match than anticipated. I got in the backseat and could maneuver around the car seat for my granddaughter to get in the hatchback to grab the food out of the bag.

I told the customer that if I got to the food, I would just then get out and run and hope for the best. That is exactly what I did as I waded through the water, the hail hitting me along with the downpour of rain.
The customer met me at the door. We had a quick exchange. I was not hanging around to get hit with more of it. By the time I made it to my car, I was soaked from head to toe. I was not waiting around to see what else Mother Nature was throwing my way.
The Drenched Dash and Warm Shower Finish
I drove home and jumped in a warm shower. My soaked clothes were thrown in with the rest of the laundry. I was thankful that at least the tip on the order was decent. Thankfully, the customer's generous tip softened the blow of turning into a human splash zone
Oh, the joys of delivering food sometimes in Amarillo. It can get to be a lot of fun.
