When I first moved to the Amarillo area, one thing I was unfamiliar with was Homecoming. We didn't have such a tradition where I came from, but I got a crash course in it.

Discovering the Texas Rite of Passage: The Homecoming Mum

The game and the dance were a huge part of high school for the students. Oh, and those mums and garters. I had never seen such a thing. Since this was Texas and we all know that everything is bigger and better here, a lot of those that my classmates and I had were massive.

The day of the game, getting to drag those around class each period was something the students looked forward to. I know that over the years a lot has changed. We had to put tape on the bells so we wouldn't disrupt our classmates. It was a fun day, though. Even before the big game, everyone was so excited to see who was paired up and going to the game and dance together.

While Homecoming is still going strong, the landscape has shifted. Many schools have cracked down on allowing students to wear the massive mums to class anymore, which feels like a minor tragedy. But now, a new threat has emerged to challenge the sacred Texas tradition, and it’s hitting close to home for all the creative DIY parents out there.

For the creative parents, grandparents, and crafters who possess the endless patience required to glue, staple, and construct these elaborate masterpieces from scratch, this is a massive blow. With back-to-school season and football weather right around the corner, panic is setting in early. Homecoming will be here before we know it, and sourcing supplies just got a whole lot harder.

Where Do DIY Parents Go From Here?

As big craft stores pivot their inventories, DIYers are left scrambling to find alternative suppliers or scouring online specialty shops just to keep the Texas tradition alive.
