Early Amarillo Fire Claims the Life of One Person
Amarillo has seen one too many fires recently. Most have been contained and the occupants survived.
Amarillo Firefighters were called out to a fire Thursday, February 9th at 4:21 am to 1616 NW 15th. The first unit on the scene found the home with a fire in a bedroom window located in the front corner of the house.
While approaching the home they found a person lying in the front yard deceased.
Firefighters were able to enter the home and found the fire in the bedroom and were able to get the fire under control by 4:41 am.
Two nearby neighbors of the victim smelled smoke as they were getting ready to head to work. Upon smelling the smoke they went over to the home. The neighbors were able to get the bedroom window open and found the occupant. The occupant was wheelchair-bound, but the neighbors pulled her out of the home and into the front yard.
No other people were in the home at the time, but unfortunately, the occupant did not survive the incident. Betty Moore, age 72 was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Fire Marshall's Office investigated and found that the fire was unintentional and the cause of the fire was undetermined.
A total of 8 units and 26 firefighters were on the scene.
