Ruidoso is about 4 1/2 hours away from Amarillo.  It is a great place to get away and it is in the mountains.  They have plenty of lodging available.  In the winter you can enjoy a little skiing up at Ski Apache and in the spring and summer, you can enjoy some horse racing at Ruidoso Downs.  Not to mention it's fun to walk their main street and stop at the cute shops and fun little wineries on the path.  Oh, and they have an all-year-round Christmas shop you don't want to miss.  The man who runs it even looks like Santa, so hmmm, that may be where he hangs out when he's not at the North Pole.

Just up the road about 3 hours and 45 minutes, Oklahoma City has a ton of things to do all year round.  It's always fun to go to Bricktown and check out the different bars and restaurants available.  Ride the river taxi around Bricktown and just enjoy the shops.  If it's in season you can catch and Oklahoma City Dodger game.  They also have the Oklahoma City Bombing National Monument Museum.  I don't care what age you are this is a powerful place to visit and it's a must-to visit to share the history with new generations so they know about what happened on this fateful day in OKC and to this country.  The OKC Zoo is a fun place to take the family or even the National Cowboy Heritage and Western Museum.
