New Restaurant Opening in Tiny Texas Town After 4-Year Wait
Just between Canyon and Hereford on Highway 60, you will find the quaint small town of Umbarger, Texas. One of Umbarger's claims to fame is its annual German sausage festival at St. Mary's Catholic Church. This small farming town has a population of a little over 300 people.
The town has a post office, a mechanic, a church, and it may or may not have a liquor store. There was a spot called R&R Liquor; however, in the decades I’ve traveled that road, both as a child and an adult, I never stepped foot into that store. I digress, located in this small town, was a restaurant called Rafter G. This is a restaurant I ate at many times.
What Happened to Rafter G's in Umbarger, Texas?
You see, Umbarger was the midpoint between Amarillo and Hereford, and many people used it as a drop-off point to exchange children. In my case, I would exchange my child with my mother, because he loved spending the weekend with his Gamma, and many times we would exchange in the Rafter G parking lot, and on multiple occasions we would head in and grab some BBQ or catfish. From what I hear, they had the best catfish around (I wouldn't know, I can't stand catfish), and their BBQ was quite tasty. The restaurant had its own unique personality. It was a sad loss for Umbarger and the surrounding areas when Kevin and Denise closed the restaurant on August 28, 2021. That ended Umbarger's only restaurant.
