JoJo Sues to Get Out of Recording Contract

The 22-year-old star is suing Da Family and Blackground Records to get out of her recording contract.

JoJo, whose real name is Joanna Noelle Blagden Levesque, claims in the lawsuit that New York state law prohibits minors from signing contracts that last longer than seven years. She was 12 when she and her parents signed her seven-album deal, so she argues that her legal responsibility to the label was null and void as of March 2011.

JoJo released her self-titled platinum-selling debut album on Blackground in 2004, and at 13 became the youngest artist in U.S. history to notch a No. 1 single, with 'Leave (Get Out).' Two years later, she released just one more album, 'The High Road,' which went on to sell 2 million copies. But then something went wrong.

The singer has since attempted to reignite her music career, singing and acting in several projects and releasing her own songs on free mixtapes. Her latest mixtape, titled ‘Agápē,’ features the breakout track 'Andre.' Watch the video here.

Universal Music, which distributes her music, has not yet commented on the lawsuit.
