There Are More Kangaroos In Amarillo Than You Think
Over the last few days, we've heard a lot about kangaroos in Amarillo. I mean, it's not exactly the place you'd expect to find these creatures hopping around. I saw someone comment no a picture about how they expect to see this in Australia, NOT Amarillo.
They're 100% correct, but these beautiful animals aren't exactly uncommon here. Yes, we know Rick Looby owns kangaroos, and sadly one less after this weekend.
Now, I said they aren't uncommon. I don't mean that half of the city owns a kangaroo, because they don't. However, Mr. Looby isn't the ONLY one that owns a kangaroo. The Amarillo Zoo is the proud owner of one as well.
If you take a visit there with the kiddos this summer, you'll be able to get an up close look at a red kangaroo that they have there. Now the red kangaroo is an absolutely beautiful sight to see.
It is the largest kangaroo of them all, and man are they quick. They can hit a maximum speed of 43 miles per hour. Now granted, they can't keep up that speed, but they can hit that in short bursts. Even the fastest person in the world can't touch that.
While they may be relatively rare to the United States, they are plentiful in Australia. There are over 11.5 million of them bouncing around that great continent. By comparison, the population of humans in Australia is 26 million.
That's one kangaroo per 2 1/4 people. I'd say that qualifies as relatively common. With all the hype around kangaroos, make it a point to get out to the zoo to see the one they have there this summer. You won't regret it.
