Exciting Plans Unveiled: Is a New City Emerging in Texas?

Texas is already full of little towns and cities that many of us have never heard of. Even those natives of Texas who have been here for decades can be stumped with cities.

That's what happens when you're one of the largest states in the union. With the amount of landmass we have, it broods areas for people to start building up and call it home.

What happens though when a business decides to build something up, then has its employees all move in or around the business? A lot of these areas are considered "unincorporated" or part of an existing city.

It's currently something happening though in Cameron County, Texas and the residents of this area want to have their own town name to call their own.

Where is Cameron County

Cameron County is home to cities like Brownsville, Harlingen and San Benito located near the shores of South Padre Island. The county itself has a population of roughly 420,000 people, so not a small county, but not a large one.

What Business Is In Cameron County Asking For This

It would be none other than Elon Musk's SpaceX. They have a launch site there called 'Starbase', and they're wanting to give their community a name and turn it into it's own town of the same name.

There are approximately 500 people living in this area according to the affidavit given to a judge in the quest for a town name.

How Do You Get To Name And Create A Town

it has to go through several steps. Petitions, judges orders, and a vote. As of now, they have cleared pretty much every step outside of a vote. That vote appears as if it's going to happen sooner rather than later.

Cameron County officials signed an order allowing employees of the launch tower to vote on whether or not we'll have a new town in Texas, and I'd say there's a pretty good chance it's going to pass.

What Happens If It Passes

It'll be considered a Type C municipality, which is a town with 200 to 5,000 residents living in it. Just like any other city or town, they'll need a government.

That government is to consist of a mayor and two commissioners. In the petition filed, it appears they already have someone in mind for governor. That would be SpaceX’s security manager, Gunnar Milburn as he's the only one listed as a candidate.

When Will We Know If It's A New Town

The election would be held on May 3rd, and if it passes, it will be recognized as a new town in Texas. The last new city to pop up in Cameron County was Los Indios and that happened back in 1995, so 30 years ago.

Let's just say this could be historic if it passes, which I anticipate will happen.
