The Texas House of Representatives recently passed legislation that would effectively ban red light cameras in the state of Texas. Drivers are thrilled. Some cities are not.

The argument from some cities hinges on the cameras making intersections safer. The whole idea behind the cameras in the first place is to act as a deterrent to people speeding through dangerous intersections. Some studies have shown that it works.

Drivers haven't been nearly as receptive to the idea, claiming they can be faulty at times. Some studies have even shown they can increase the rate of crashes as people will slam on their brakes to avoid hitting an intersection when a light turns red.

The Texas Senate has voted twice to do away with the cameras, so those in favor of the bill are hopeful it will pass.

There are amendments making it possible for cities who would penalized for canceling their contracts to keep the lights until their contract is up.
