It's one of those things you HAVE to have in Texas, especially if you're going to be behind the wheel of a car, or buy alcohol or tobacco.

Yes, I'm talking about an ID/driver's license. It's an absolute must, and they've just unveiled some new changes to what they look like.

What Changes Are They Making To The ID Cards

The first thing they've done is change the material they're made out of. They are now being made from a tamper-resistant polycarbonate material that is compliant with the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators.

Another change they have made is wrapped around that fancy gold star they made such a big deal about. You had to have the gold star in order to get on an airplane, but now that star is being changed from gold to black.

The last change made has simply reorganized how the personal info is laid out on the card, making it a bit easier to read than the older ones.

Do I Have To Get A New Texas ID Right Now

No, you are in no hurry or under any obligation to get yourself a new one. As long as your current ID hasn't expired, you are welcome to hang on to that one until it does expire.

Why Are They Making The Changes

The biggest reason is along the lines of safety and security. It's been relatively easy to make counterfeit IDs, and with the new material and features on the card, they believe they'll be able to thwart the fakes from being made.

For example, the black star on there is laser-engraved, and overall, the IDs are simply tougher to replicate from a look standpoint.
