Pictures Of The Damage Left Behind From The Tornado In Canyon
It all started off as a pretty calm day in Amarillo. There was a forecast predicting some rain a bit later in the evening and into the overnight hours, but nothing would've prepared us for what came.
By 5 pm, a baseball tournament that was supposed to take place in Amarillo the weekend of April 26th was canceled due to the impending rain. They felt there would be too much in the overnight hours to get the fields playable.
That's nothing new as tournaments have been canceled ahead of time due to weather. However, there wasn't talk of how severe they could become. Those reports started coming in a little later in the day.
2-4 inches of rain was predicted, with some of those storms being severe. Typically the really severe storms jump past Amarillo and Canyon and reside more in the plains areas of Panhandle and Hereford.
This time was different. Around 11 pm, the rain began to pound down. Thunder, lightning, wind. All the elements were there for a huge storm. However, tornadoes were not anyone's bingo card for the evening.
By midnight, tornado sirens were going off in both Amarillo and Canyon. TV stations were working overtime as they had gone wall to wall with coverage. Reports of funnel clouds were popping up everywhere.
Tornado touchdowns were being reported by users on social media, but unconfirmed by anyone else. Then a confirmed report of a tornado touching down in the Madison Park area of Canyon. Damage was being reported, and some photos began to surface.
However, the best look wouldn't come until morning, and it was more than anyone expected. Here is a look at just some of the damage to hit the Canyon area from the storms.
