Doug Smith was a musician, recording artist, and composer, father, and a true Panhandle native.The incredibly popular pianist was born and raised in Kermit, Texas, and then settled in Petersburg for many years.

You may recognize one of many popular songs of Smith's. He recorded 10 full-length albums and in 2003, Doug also was the subject and star of PBS documentary titled "There It Is."

Doug Smith started playing by ear at 2 years old and played his first piano concert at the age of 6. The word "prodigy" only begins to describe the incredible talent he blessed the Texas Panhandle with for 52 years.

Smith's music has been featured on everything from Texas Country Reporter to national TV commercials.

Family members are saying that Doug's death came as a huge shock and all they know as of right now is that he passed away sometime between 10 p.m. and 9 a.m. on June 6th, 2016.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday the 9th of June at First Baptist Church in Petersburg, Texas.
