A young child, about 8 or 9 years old, was sent to the hospital with injuries that don't appear to be life-threatening Tuesday evening.  The child was struck by a car while crossing the street in what is described as "an unsafe manner" at 46th and Parker in Amarillo.

"The boy was struck while crossing Parker Street in an unsafe manner near its intersection with West 46th Avenue about 7 p.m., police said.

The driver of the car got a green light and was driving west through the intersection legally, police said, though she was blinded by the sun when the child entered the roadway and the two collided."

Police blocked off the intersection while they investigated the accident.  Police added that the child's injuries don't appear to be life-threatening, and include an abrasion to his hip.

This is a very harsh reminder that we must teach our children to check and double check before they set foot into the street.
