We hear plenty about crime in Amarillo, and most of the crime we hear about it of the violent type of crime variety.

However, that's not even the highest amount of crime that takes place in the city. Property crime is the MAIN problem when it comes to different types of crime in the city, and you don't typically hear a whole lot about it.

Imagine waking up in the morning, getting yourself all ready for work or school. Everything is going great, another normal morning. Then you walk outside to get in your car...and it's gone.

Panic immediately sets in. No one else would've taken it, and if your significant other decided to trade cars with you for the day, they would've told you. Yup, good chance your car just got stolen.

Does it happen often in Amarillo? Maybe not a TON, but it does happen, and there are areas where it's more prone to happening.

As we go through these areas, sadly some of them won't surprise you, but some might. Let's take a look at where you're most likely to have your car stolen from you.

THE WORST SPOT

The most likely place to have your car stolen may shock you at first glance, but if you take a minute to think about it, it may not shock you TOO much. That area is all around Rick Husband International Airport.

Think about it, you've parked your car there to head out on a trip somewhere. It's going to be sitting there for several days unattended outside of maybe some camera around the parking garage. There isn't a whole lot of resistance and someone isn't going to come running out of their house when they hear the alarm.

Next time you go to the airport, maybe think about taking an Uber or something if it's possible. Your car will be safer at home.

A SURPRISING SPOT?

When we think of Lake Tanglewood, we think big and beautiful homes positioned along the water. Now, thieves view it the same way...except they also think about how there are probable some very nice cars in that area as well. They would be 100% correct too.

Now it's not just limited to Lake Tanglewood. The area surrounding it also is a bit of a hotspot. If you've driven out to Lake Tanglewood, you'll realize it's wide open out there, and on a state highway so you can go fast and not get pulled over for speeding.

The area south of Hollywood Rd and north of McCormick Rd experience a higher than average rate of stolen vehicles

THE REST OF THE WORST

If you live in the downtown area around HODGETOWN between 1st and 11th, or even if you're just out and about for an evening, there is a higher than normal chance of your car disappearing somewhere into the night. To me, that would seem to be a tougher spot to take a car, but maybe not considering it's one of the hotspots.

Another not so great place is between Washington St and Georgia St. To be more exact, between SW 28th St and SW 34th Ave. It creates this long rectangle that shows a higher than usual rate of stolen vehicles.

The last place that shows a much higher than average rate is a small area along Bell St. between SW 34th Ave and Fulton St. Ironically this is the area where all our radio stations are located. Thankfully our station vehicles are immediately recognizable and we're going to be able to find them pretty easily.
