Former Marine Sergeant, Gavin Eugene Long, has been identified as the shooter who shot six cops in Baton Rouge on Sunday, July 17, leaving three dead.

According to CNN, investigators will likely look to the writings and online footprint of Cosmo Setepenra, the name Long legally changed his name to, in order to figure out his motive. During his military service, Long, who was from Kansas City, Missouri, was awarded the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal. Long legally changed his name to Cosmo Ausar Setepenra in May 2015, claiming that he was "seeking to correct" his name, because he was part of the indigenous society, United Washitaw De Dugdahmoundvah Mu'er nation. Setepenra reportedly wrote "esoteric health and nutritional practices" and "how to develop your higher-self" and described himself as "Freedom Strategist, Mental Game Coach, Nutritionist, Author and Spiritual Advisor" on two separate websites.

In a YouTube video posted on July 10, Long speaks about recent protests and officer-involved shootings. Long mentions the July 4 holiday as a celebration of an uprisings against oppressive forces and questions why some violent actions are perceived as criminal while others are celebrated.

"I just wanted to let y'all know, don't affiliate me with nothing," he says, adding that he wanted people to know that his actions were his alone. "I thought my own stuff; I made my own decisions; I'm the one who gotta listen to the judgment."

In the July 10 video, he specifically mentions Independence Day.

"I want to let you guys…look you really got to look at things…take for instance the holiday that just passed, Independence Day," Long said in the July 10 video. "Independence Day is really based on, say, George Washington, and Americans fighting against their oppressor, Britain. And we celebrate that! We tell them they’re right! You get it? But when an African fights back, it’s wrong. But every time a European fights back and gets his oppressor, he’s right. But as soon as an African tries to fight back (shrugs shoulders and puts hands up)…why is that?"

Long, who was killed during the shootout with police, carried out the attack on his 29th birthday.
