Could Antibacterial Soaps Actually Be Harmful To You?
The FDA is considering banning antibacterial soaps, claiming there is no evidence that antibacterial chemicals help prevent the spread of germs, and that there is actually some evidence that they may pose health risks! This shocks the hell out of me! I'm an antibacterial soap freak! I use it everyday, several times a day! I feel like I've been lied to!
Here I think I'm helping prevent the spread of germs, when I'm not, and I'm putting myself at risk while doing it!
"The Food and Drug Administration says there is no evidence that antibacterial chemicals used in liquid soaps and washes help prevent the spread of germs, and there is some evidence they may pose health risks.
The agency said it is revisiting the safety of chemicals like triclosan in light of recent studies suggesting they can interfere with hormone levels and spur the growth of drug-resistant bacteria.
The government's preliminary ruling lends new credence to longstanding warnings from researchers who say the chemicals are, at best, ineffective and at worst, a threat to public health."
The proposition from the FDA will require companies producing antibacterial soaps to prove their soap and body washes are more effective than plain soaps. If they can not demonstrate the effectiveness, their soaps will have to be reformulated, re-labeled, or completely removed from the shelves.
Again, I feel like I've been lied to this entire time! I'll be waiting to see the results of this. And if they aren't pretty, at least I'll be saving a couple bucks! I'll invest that money in hand-sanitizer, because that stuff has got to work!
