It seems that there is nothing worse than knowing that your dog could be harmed.  Well what if your beloved dog's food not only harmed your pet, but you the owner.  Diamond pet food has issued a recall due to salmonella contamination.

In April of this year, Diamond Pet Food pulled three brands of dry dog food off the shelves due to salmonella contamination.  And now as a precautionary step, the company has expanded its recall.

Fourteen people in nine different states have been poisoned by a rare strain of salmonella, from their dog's food.  At least five of them have been hospitalized.  The cases were found in dog owners who had contact with their dog's food.

The dog food was sent to 16 different states and Canada.  Cases have been reported in Alabama, Connecticut, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and Prevention has been investigating the cause of the outbreak.  The main reasons people are getting sick is because of the lack of cleanliness.  They not washing their hands after touching the dog food, cross contamination on cooking utensils, their food being near the dog food, or direct contact with the dog carrying the disease.

WellPet LLC and Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance Pet Foods Inc, have also recalled some of their dog food as a precaution.

It is a horrible thought to think that your dog has been infected with salmonella, but to know that you or your kids could get sick is even worse.  So far the only dog food known to be contaminated is the dry dog food.  But as a precaution you should always wash your hands.  And if you use a cup or other kitchen utensils to serve your dog's food, do not use it for your food.

Take precaution so that you or your loved ones do not end up in the hospital.  And as you should always do, wash your hands!!
