Good News Amarillo JC Penney Westgate Staying Put. For Now

The fate of JC Penney in Westgate Mall was pretty much unknown, until now. JC Penney revealed the list of stores to close permanently as the company enters Chapter 11 bankruptcy.  The bankruptcy filing for the department store anchor is the largest company to file for protection to date during the coronavirus pandemic, initially saying it would close 242 stores.  June 4 in a filing that list dropped to 154 locations across the country.  There are 7 JC Penney stores closing in Texas. Amarillo is not one of them. The company said that there could be more stores closed in the next year however. But for now, thank goodness, not only for consumers but for the struggling Westgate Mall which lost its Sears anchor store in 2019.

The announcement comes as J.C. Penney is gradually reopening stores that have been temporarily closed due to the coronavirus pandemic. The company said nearly 500 had reopened as of Thursday.
