When you are out delivering in Amarillo, you never know what you are going to encounter. There are so many different ways a delivery can go. They can be incredibly easy and profitable, the ones you dream of.
They can also be the kind that nightmares are made of. You can have a restaurant that takes forever. You can hit all kinds of construction. Then it can all end with not being able to find the drop-off spot or a rude customer.
The Gamble of Dashing: From Nightmares to Dream Deliveries
It's like spinning a wheel and hoping for the best when you head out to Dash in Amarillo. Recently, I had one of those really cool deliveries. One of those that you wished would happen more often.
It started out like any other. I made it to the restaurant and picked up the food. I then looked up where I was heading. It was a little bit of a drive, but not too bad. When I got to the customer's house, I went to the trunk of my car to get the food out of the insulated bag.

As I was walking up to the house, I noticed someone walking out the front door. I thought he might be meeting me at my car to get the food. He was not. Usually, the food is for the person walking toward me." So I asked if it was his, and he politely told me that it must be for his roommate.
So I continued to the door and dropped off the food, snapped the photo, and headed back to my car. The original person I encountered was heading back in, I guess he was checking the mail.
So I was going to try to break the ice with a joke and went with "Well, the food sure smells good, are you sure it's not yours?" with a smile. He stopped me and asked if his roommate at least tipped me well.
The "Earn by Time" Mystery: Waiting for the Tip Reveal
I told him honestly that I had no idea. Since I was delivering by time, I never know until I get back to my car and hit confirm on the order. So he stopped and grabbed cash out of his pocket. He said he wanted to make sure it was taken care of.

Of course, I told him he didn't have to do that, and he said he wanted to. So he handed me a $10 bill. I smiled, thanked him, and told him that he made my day, because he certainly did. It was something I was not expecting.
When I got back to my car, the roommate did, in fact, tip me well. He gave me $6 for his tip. So when the delivery was all said and done, I made almost $20 on that delivery. Definitely one of those I will remember for a while.
Amarillo Pride: Small Moments That Make the Drive Worthwhile
As many non-tippers as I end up seeing in Amarillo, this is the type of delivery and customer that you really appreciate. I just wish there were more of them.
