Stealing from Amarillo’s Market Street? Not on Their Watch
Market Street is where I do all of my grocery shopping. So when I go in and they change something I tend to notice. The change that I noticed when I went in to do my shopping yesterday was noticed right away.
Every cart in the store had a new sign attached to it. As I got to noticing it more it had a couple of new things added to the wheels at the bottom as well. To say that I was impressed and actually thought this change was cool. I mean I must have told the cashier how cool this was about fifty times before I walked out.
See Market Street is testing a new anti-theft device. It is something I have never seen before in my life. I guess you can call this a smart cart.
Here is how it works. If someone goes into the store and loads up their cart and makes the decision to walk out without paying through the checkout lane first, there is where they will have a problem.
The cart will know that you didn't go through the lane and pay. See? Smart cart. Then as that cart tries to make it out the front door the cart will lock up. That is what those things on the wheel will do.
I was talking with their store manager, Dale and he said that the first hope is that the sign will deter someone from shoplifting. I mean if you know this would happen wouldn't it stop you? Just think of the embarrassment as your cart makes a sudden stop. You won't be able to budge it even an inch further.
So far only Market Street is testing these out. They will be in all of the United Supermarkets soon.
Talk about cool. That was really all I could say as I discovered this new addition. I asked Dale when these changes to the cart happened and he said while he was on vacation last week. I smiled and said that was what I thought. I was in Market Street last week before I went out of town to Denver this definitely happened while I was gone too.
So be warned not to try to nonchalantly walk a cart out of the store without paying. It will not end well for you. I know the price of groceries has gone up lately but don't take it out on the store. You will not get out of Market Street with all your free groceries. They are not making it easy for thieves.
