We reached out to Goodwill of North Texas, and they confirmed that they are opening the new store in Amarillo and are very excited about it. The store is expected to open in April 2026.

More Than a Thrift Store

According to Robin Rayney, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries of Northwest Texas, the new location will operate as a retail store similar to the Bell Plaza location. The building will also include a satellite career resource center, with the training center expected to open at a later date.

Career Resource Center Coming to East Amarillo

What many people may not realize is that Goodwill also operates career resource centers. While most people think of Goodwill as a thrift store, the organization does much more, offering job training and career development programs to help people enter or advance in the workforce.

Long-Term Plans for Amarillo

This is just the beginning of bigger plans for the city. Rayney shared that Goodwill has a long-term strategic plan in place for Amarillo.

It’s been a wonderful community, and we really love the dynamic. There are so many different parts of the community working together to build a better, stronger, and thriving Amarillo,” Rayney said.

2026 is expected to be a big year for Goodwill of Northwest Texas, with plans to open three retail stores and two career resource centers.

Goodwill’s Regional Impact Across Northwest Texas

Goodwill of Northwest Texas serves over 40 counties, including Lubbock, Plainview, and Amarillo.

Goodwill’s History and Mission

Goodwill was founded in 1902 by  Rev. Edgar J. Helms in Boston. In the basement of the Methodist church, he opened the first Goodwill store and hired those who had previously come to the church for handouts.  These people worked repairing and selling items that were collected.  Goodwill's philosophy was “a hand up, not a hand-out.”

What This Means for East Amarillo Shoppers

This will be another great opportunity for the east side of Amarillo, offering another option for affordable goods.
