More Deputies on Amarillo Streets: Holiday Patrols Target Impaired Driving Starting Dec. 13
Tis the season for celebration! It's the holiday season and everyone has Christmas parties, friend and family gatherings, and ringing in the new year.
However, a lot of celebrating is involved with these festivities, and a lot of time it involves alcohol. People go out and enjoy their parties have a couple of drinks and then get behind the wheel. According to the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), one in 4 deaths this year has been due to drunk driving. That's 616 people who have lost their lives this year due to someone drinking and getting behind the wheel of a car.
That’s why each year, TxDOT partners with local law enforcement to keep our streets safe. Starting on December 13, the Potter County Sheriff’s Office and the Amarillo Police Department will increase patrols in our community to combat impaired driving. They won’t just be looking for impaired drivers, they’ll also be watching for unsafe driving behaviors.
How Can You Help in the Efforts?
Don't Drink and Drive: If you plan on drinking, make sure to arrange a safe ride home by having a designated driver or using a rideshare service.
Don't Drive Unsafe: Don't speed, don't text and drive, put your phone away, and limit distractions.
The Selective Traffic Enforcement Program grant through the Texas Department of Transportation provides overtime funds for those extra law enforcement officers.
We all want to go out and have a great time celebrating Christmas with those we know and love, and bringing in the New Year with a bang! You can celebrate while staying safe.
