Massive Pothole on I-27 Near 2219 Wreaks Havoc on Drivers

Construction brings woes, and I-27 between Amarillo and Canyon is under construction and will be under construction until 2028.  Unfortunately, when something new is being built, other problems pop up.

The Texas Department of Transportation is currently working on widening I-27 to 3 lanes on each side of the interstate, and because of this the speed limit has been lowered and some lanes are narrow or closed.

BEWARE of the Giant Pot Hole

According to a post in the All Things Canyon Facebook group, there is a large pothole that is wreaking havoc on the vehicles of Amarillo and Canyon residents. The pothole is located going north to Amarillo right past the 2219 overpass on the east side lane.  It was described to be 2ft in diameter.

On Sunday, December 8th, I was traveling from Canyon to Amarillo.  While being very aware of the speed limit, I thought I was doing good.  NOPE!  Just about at 2219, I hit the biggest pothole in the road.  It was deep enough that my truck wheel felt like it went down into it and then back out.  It wasn't just a small crack in the road.  It literally jolted me holding the wheel.  There is no way to miss this hole, as it is in a place in the right lane and there is nowhere to go in your lane to miss it. The other bad part is that you are concentrating on all the construction around you and before you know it, JOLT.   I could see where a small car could actually have car damage from this pothole in the road.  -Barbara Goforth

Kenzie Romines shared a video of the pothole with us and noted,

"Luckily I didn’t sustain terrible damage compared to smaller lower vehicles that I heard did but that pothole did knock my truck's front end all out of alignment."

When Will It Be Fixed

We reached out to the Texas Department of Transportation to see what was being done about the pothole and they responded,

Repairs on the pothole began yesterday evening (Dec. 8) and are currently ongoing. TxDOT expects the repairs to be completed by the end of the day, today, Dec. 9. It's great to hear that TxDOT is on top of the problem, as with all construction, issues will spring up from time to time. Unfortunately, this is one of those issues where unsuspecting drivers hit a pothole that damaged their vehicles.

As always when you are driving through construction always stay alert because you never know when something unexpected might pop up in the road, like a very large pothole.
