Justin Bieber Quits Instagram, Selena Gomez Backtracks on Snapchat
Welp, you've really gone and done it now, Beliebers!
On Tuesday August 16, Justin Bieber didn't just make good on his threat to make his Instagram private — he deactivated his account, leaving over 77.8 million followers in the digital dust. Meanwhile, his ex girlfriend Selena Gomez appears to regret jumping into the fray.
Justin's decision comes, of course, in response to a flurry of drama and negative feedback that has plagued his Instagram over the past few days. Over the weekend (August 13 and 14), the "Cold Water" singer posted a series of photos of him hanging out with rumored girlfriend Sofia Richie in Tokyo, prompting certain users to write not-so-friendly things about the model.
"I’m gonna make my Instagram private if you guys don’t stop the hate," Bieber captioned one of his photos, directing the threat to followers leaving negative comments on both his and Richie's Instagram accounts.
"This is getting out of hand," he warned. "If you guys are really fans you wouldn’t be so mean to people that I like."
Fans, however, were not impressed by Bieber's threat, in turn creating the hashtag #RIPBeliebers on Twitter to express their hurt over the singer seemingly choosing Richie over his fans.
Surprisingly, Bieber's ex Selena Gomez then weighed in, reportedly commenting on the artist's page, "If you can’t handle the hate then stop posting pictures of your girlfriend lol — it should be special between you two only. Don’t be mad at your fans. They love you. They were there for you before anyone."
Gomez's advice resulted in a brief but intensely personal (and very public) Instagram spat, with the two pop stars trading since-deleted barbs in the comments section of Bieber's account, prompting fans to create the #SelenaEndedJustinBieberParty hashtag.
However, early Tuesday the "Kill 'Em With Kindness" singer seemed to backtrack on her opinions and expressed regret over engaging with Bieber on Instagram, writing in a Snapchat story, "What I said was selfish and pointless."
Since Bieb's account has vanished, a new hashtag has emerged — #JustinDeactivatedParty — and Beliebers are feeling all sorts of ways about it, with some absolutely distraught and others supportive of their fave's decision to make good on his promise.
However, the Canadian pop superstar remains on Twitter and Facebook, though he has yet to address his Instagram departure on either. So all is not lost... for now.
