Supercharged Electric Scooter Seen On I-40 In Amarillo, Texas
Yesterday in Amarillo, something a little wild and crazy happened. Someone was just cruising along on their motorized scooter, which in theory doesn't seem all that out of the ordinary. I see plenty of people humming around town on them.
However, I see them either on sidewalks, bike lanes, or on side roads. Perfectly acceptable places for the scooters to be. However, I-40 would be deemed an inappropriate place for one of these scooters to be.
Yesterday that didn't seem to matter to a motorist as he was just out for a bit of a joyride on the highway trying to get places just like everyone else.
Here's the wild thing about this. He was moving just as fast as traffic on the highway. If you watch the video above, you'll see the driver recording and showing their speed at 66 MPH...and the scooter was keeping pace.
Even crazier is the fact that he's wearing shorts and no helmet. A motorcycle is one thing. A motorized scooter without a helmet? Yeah, that's a hard pass for me. You're asking for something to happen.
It does bring up the question though, is it legal to drive around like that on a motorized scooter?
That's where it gets a little tricky. I mean, there are no specific laws wrapped around them and where they can be operated, but generally they have to follow the same rules and laws as an electric bicycle or moped.
Those rules are they can be operated on the road in area where the speed limit posted is 35 MPH or less. To be clear, the speed on I-40 greatly exceeds that.
Oh yeah, remember how I mentioned he wasn't rocking a helmet? Well, those are required in the state of Texas if you're under 21 years of age. We don't know how old this person was, so can't say if they were breaking any laws for that, but I'd say it's safe to assume they were.
