One thing Amarillo has seemingly lacked for quite some time are stages for musicians to perform for the community. Sure, there's live music at bars and other indoor places, but outdoor venues are lacking.

Well all of that is about to change as we're set to get a brand new one Friday, September 15, and it's in honor of someone those of you who have lived in Amarillo for awhile know.

The all new AJ Swope Performance Plaza at Arts in the Sunset is set to be dedicated that day, giving the community a place to gather and hear some great local (and close to local) music here in Amarillo. The public dedication will be held at 7 pm.

And the dedication won't just be a bunch of people talking though, because they'll christen that stage with a performance by Texas musician Zac Wilkerson. If you don't know who he is, he's a critically acclaimed singer-songwriter formerly of Amarillo, so he's got ties to the area.

The plaza is spectacular. It has a large stage and it has an attached green room for artists to get ready, three separate dressing rooms, an area where tables and chairs can be placed, and plenty of room to dance of course. It can be used for other things outside of music as well. Fundraisers, outdoor events, and even weddings can be held here.

“The Arts in the Sunset staff and board are humbled and honored to be able to memorialize AJ Swope in this way,” said Rachel Flores, executive director of Arts in the Sunset. She continued, "AJ was a man with extraordinary talents and a fierce love for his community, and we hope that by bearing his name, this Plaza too will come to know and share the extraordinary.”
