This is news to me. We have tarantulas in the Panhandle, and they are spreading. Recently they have been spotted in Canyon, Amarillo and Palo Duro Canyon and other neighborhoods.

In a recent press release, the reason for the sightings are due to the spiders mating season. If you come upon a tarantula, you should stay cautious however they are not poisonous, but they can bite but actually that is a rare occurrence. The bite is similar to that of a bee sting.

Tarantula mating season runs from May to October. They are amazing creatures and should be respected.

Personally, I’ll respect them from many feet away.

Oh let the nightmares begin.
