If Pantex Were To Burn Down, Would There Be Nuclear Consequences?
With all the wildfires that have been raging through the panhandle, there was one thing that started to creep into people's minds. To be honest, it was a real concern too especially with how little we seem to know about it.
What happens if the fire somehow reaches Pantex and burns it down? What would happen?
For those that don't know, Pantex is a nuclear weapons plant where they disassemble bombs. The fear was that if the fire hits Pantex and it burns the building to the ground, that nuclear bombs would start going off and take out the entire city of Amarillo and more with it.
Well good news, should a fire like this reach Pantex, we don't have to fear. It's not going to cause a massive nuclear reaction that would take out any city.
Aside from the fact that the whole place is beyond secure and protected as much as possible against something like that, Pantex would take as many precautions as needed to keep the fire away.
Should the fire reach the plant itself and start to burn, the uranium is so far underground that we'd have nothing to worry about. The fire wouldn't reach it and it wouldn't create some massive explosion.
Even Pantex officials said if the place were to burn, it wouldn't affect the operations there which tells you that they have it so secure that there is no danger to the public. In fact, it's probably the most secure place anywhere in the Texas Panhandle.
So fear not Amarillo and panhandle region. Pantex is not going to blow up the entire city.
