With the baseball season starting to get into full swing with Spring Training, it means the gates to HODGETOWN will soon open up here in Amarillo. Nothing beats going to the game, no question about that.

If you can't attend though, there's always the radio to turn to.

However, you don't want someone in that booth who doesn't know how to call the game. Nothing is worse than that. We've been pampered with the voices we've heard coming through those speakers over the years, and this year will be no different.

The Sod Poodles announced that Zach Goodman will be the play-by-play voice of the Amarillo Sod Poodles this season. It will be his second season with the club, and his first as the primary voice of the team.

Zach introduced himself to Amarillo last season with his broadcasting debut. He stepped in as the color guy following Chris Caray's exit as he took on a job as a voice of the Oakland Athletics (now just the Athletics) leaving a hole to fill next to Stefan Caray.

Like the Caray twins, Zach comes with his own broadcasting lineage. His dad, Drew Goodman, has been the TV play-by-play voice for the Colorado Rockies for the last 24 years, so he doesn't come without being around it his entire life.

Zach joined the booth after wrapping up his collegiate baseball career where he was a catcher. In baseball, the best managers and voices on the air are typically catchers. They know the game better than anyone as they're involved in each and every pitch.

Their view of the field is the best out there as they're the only ones who can see the whole field, meaning their perspective is always different from anyone else. That translates to the broadcasting booth as you get more in-depth analysis of the game.
