When you are a kid and trick-or-treating, nothing's worse than coming across a house that hands out toothbrushes, popcorn balls, or those old peanut marshmallows (You remember those things). When you're a kid, the dream is to find that neighborhood where they give you nothing but King Size Snicker Bars and full size bags of Big League Chew.

When I was growing up there was always the fear that someone put a razor-blade in your candy apple or poisoned a piece of candy using a syringe. Well, things these days have gotten a little weirder.

Halloween has become a time for setting up gory scenes in your front yard and taking tours of scary haunted houses full of actors drenched in fake blood. Gone are the days of simply hanging a paper skeleton on your front door and carving a few smirking pumpkins. It’s getting scary out there. Especially if you’ve been the victim of an accident and everyone thinks you're just a Halloween decoration,

From dogs dressed as Darth Vaderto Elvis kitties, we can’t stop stuffing our four-legged friends into Halloween attire each October. Dog and cat costume parades are more popular than ever, and everyone from major pet supply companies like Petco to mom-and-pop Etsy dealers make a mint on adorable animal outfits. (Our pets, on the other hand, become more indignant with each passing fall).

We have our local "haunts" here in Amarillo. From 6 Street Massacre to Farmagedon, they are sure to give you a good scare. But, it is nothing like the McKamey Manor haunted house featured in the video below.

Halloween is on its way, and parties are bound to pop up. The only problem is that you don't have a costume. You could throw on a dirty old bedsheet, cut a few holes in it and tell people you're a beige ghost. Or you could actually be clever and in-tune with what's happening and hip (as the kids say) by going as viral video star the honey badger.

Halloween is haunted-house season, the one time of year you when, if you want, you can pay a random group of actors to fill up an old warehouse with gory props and costumes and scare the snot out of some people. But if you’re looking for a subtler, truly frightening experience, America is full of houses that really are haunted (well, maybe).

Sure, Halloween is all about the kiddos. Opening the front door to the neighborhood wee ones (yours or someone else's) dressed in their trick-or-treating finery is a sugar rush unto itself.
