Christmas is pretty much here.  You’re trying to save money and get out of debt.  Well, you just happen to have an unopened cookie jar from last Christmas sitting around your house collecting dust.  Is it okay to dust that box off, wrap it up, and give it away to someone else?  Of course it is!  But there are some re-gifting rules that will help you from getting busted.

It is ok to re-gift, but you don't want to get caught in the act.  Here are a couple of rules that you should follow to keep yourself from looking inconsiderate and cheap.

1. Does the re-gifting make sense?

Before you give that cookie jar away, make sure it is going to the right person.  You wouldn't want to give it to your super healthy, stay away from sugar cousin.

2. Don't re-gift things from meaningful people.

If your sweet little grandmother took time to buy you a candy dish or throw blanket, don't give it away.  Even though you may not need it or want it, imagine the smile that will light up her face when she comes to visit.

3. Take off the name tag.

You want to be sure to inspect the gift you re-gift.  It would be terrible is Sheryl opened a gift that said to Bobby with love from grandma.

4. Avoid Re-gifting In the Same Circle

I you are having a friends gift giving, don't re-gift the toaster oven your best friend Cindy gave you.  She'll notice and it won't have a good outcome.

5. Re-wrap the gift.

You want to open it completely because the original gift giver could have slipped a secret note inside the gift.  Be thorough.

So, yes, it is ok to re-gift this year, but make sure you do it right.  This will make sure everyone has a wonderful Christmas!
