BREAKING: Amarillo ISD Votes To Close Three Schools
The public schools in Amarillo have been facing some issues for quite some time now when it comes to enrollment. The numbers have been steadily dipping, and several schools have found themselves in some tough positions.
A couple of weeks ago, the Amarillo ISD board got together to discuss potential school closures and to place some schools on the watchlist. Well, now we have learned the fate of several schools.
Tonight, December 16, the Amarillo ISD Board of Trustees decided to shut down three schools at the end of the school year.
Three of the four schools that had fallen below the number of students before considering closure have sadly reached the ultimate fate.
Park Hills Elementary, Pleasant Valley Elementary, and Sunrise Elementary will all be permanently closed at the end of the school year due to their low enrollment numbers.
The other school that was facing closure, Allen 6th Grade Campus, will get at least a one year reprieve to see if they can boost their enrollment above the 250 students needed to at least avoid the potential closure list.
The biggest reason for declining enrollment is the declining birth rate in the city. With less kids being born, there are obviously less kids to sign up for school.
With those three schools set to close at the end of the year, the fate of 567 students is now up in the air as to what school they will be attending next year.
Stay tuned as there are more answers to come as to what led them to this decision.
