What Is Amarillo’s Obsession With Subway & Sonic?
There are always things you expect to see on almost every corner of Amarillo. Toot'n Totum comes to mind, but things I didn't expect to see everywhere are Subway and Sonic.
As I've driven around and gotten to know the city, I've been blown away at how there seems to be both of these delectable fast food restaurants on what feels like every corner of the city.
Now don't get me wrong, I enjoy grabbing myself a quick sandwich on the run. I can smash an Italian BMT in a hurry and wanna go back for seconds. Then I can easily hop across the street to wash it down with a Route 44 Cherry Limeade. I just can't figure out why they feel like they're on every...single...corner of Amarillo.
There are SO many options out there for grabbing a quick bite to eat. Did Sonic and Subway make a deal with the city that said they get dibs on every free plot of land? Or am I missing the fact that Amarillo just loves these 2 restaurants THAT much?
There are 17 Subway restaurants in the city and 13 Sonic locations. Right, 30 locations between 2 restaurants. By comparison, there are 11 McDonald's locations, and they're widely known as the most recognizable fast food restaurant on the planet. Amarillo is 103.9 square miles, which means if spaced out right, you will find either a Sonic or Subway roughly every 3 1/2 square miles. I mean, is that really necessary?
In any event, I love both of these restaurants, I do...I just don't need one every 3 1/2 square miles, my mind doesn't change THAT fast!
