Several Amarillo, Texas Businesses Staying Closed Due To High Wind
The wind we're dealing with today is something unlike anything we've dealt with here in Amarillo over the last few years. Wind gusts of up to 70 mph have been projected, XCEL Energy doing random power shutoffs to mitigate fire risks.
It's definitely an event, and other places in Amarillo are taking notice of that. Normally, school and business closures tend to be mitigated to snow and ice, but today, we're seeing something we don't normally see.

That would be closures of school districts that aren't on Spring Break, as well as a few businesses in Amarillo who've decided to shut their doors for the day.
There's not question that for a couple of these businesses, the decision to close their doors today was tough. It's Friday, so a lot of people wanting to go out and celebrate the start of the weekend, not to mention the final day of Spring Break for the Amarillo & Canyon area schools.
The two school districts that decided to shut down for the day are Childress ISD and Nazareth ISD. My guess is their Spring Break starts next week, so those kiddos just got an extra day of it.
Around Amarillo, there are four businesses that we are aware of that are staying closed for the day so their employees don't have to fight the crazy winds.
If you were looking forward to dinner and drinks at Cask N Cork, you'll have to choose a different day this weekend to do that. Kids wanting to go jump around at AMP'D Adventure Park? Yeah, also going to have to find another day for that.
The other two businesses shutting their doors for the day are The Market on Tierra Blanca and all Panhandle Community Services offices will have their doors shut for the day.
