I did some digging, no pun intended, trying to figure out just what is going on. Turns out, it's a lot.

2021 Roadway Rehabilitation Project

It all kicked off on November the 1st on Western. To be fair, some progress has been made, and I'm sure once it's finished we'll all talk over a cup of coffee how much nicer it is.

The project on Western is limited to the stretch of road between 45th and 34th, which I'm sure you're aware of.

Concrete, Pavement, Manholes, Oh My!

According to the City of Amarillo website, there's a lot going on with this particular project. Not only have the ripped up the existing pavement, there are several other things on the agenda.

• Adjusting conflicting manholes and valves
• Placing new concrete pavement
• Installing pavement markings
• Curb and gutter repair
• Driveway improvements at select locations

When you look at it laid out like that, it's easier to understand just why it's taken so long.

For Now, Avoid The Area Or Use Caution

If possible, just avoid the area if you can. Sure, going out of your way can be a pain. So can getting stuck in construction waiting forever for your chance to go through the intersection.

If you can't avoid the area, use caution. There are crews out there working, and the inconvenience isn't their fault. They're just doing a job.
