Amarillo Bombers Indoor Soccer Is A Must For All Families
In a city the size of Amarillo, we don't truly have the amenities and events of the same magnitude as some of the bigger cities. Pro teams in the four major sports (MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL)? Nope, no chance.
Major universities competing in power conferences? Nope. We tend to be limited to minor league teams and Division II athletics when it comes to sporting events. Other events are even lower level than that.
Now let me be clear, there's nothing wrong with that. They provide us sports and entertainment in the city, and that's all we can ask for. The most recognizable is obviously the Sod Poodles, then there are some that you may not have even known about.
The Amarillo Bombers have entered the chat. I've been here in Amarillo for just a touch under four years now, I'm an AVID sports fan, and truthfully? I had no idea they were even here. Now, I'll add I'm not a soccer guy and I had never been to a soccer game in my life, even youth.
That all changed Saturday night when the family and I all shared a first together, the first soccer game for any of us...and it was one of the most enjoyable sporting experiences I've been a part of.
They know exactly how to get the crowd hyped up. When it was game time, those lights went down, the arena got loud, and the hype man got on that mic. Lights floating all around the arena, it felt like the opening sequence for an NBA team.
And that's exactly how they did it. Each player was introduced individually, many of them trotting out to the field with their own kids.
Once the introductions wrapped up, the action began, and my goodness was there some action. Now, soccer is usually played on a football sized field, there is a ton of running, and not a whole lot of fast-paced action.
Indoor soccer is a completely different beast. It's a hybrid of soccer and hockey, and it makes for a crazy enjoyable experience. The field is the size of a hockey rink, players come in and out off the bench constantly with fresh legs.
Those fresh legs lead to a ton of fast-paced action...and a lot of goals, at least at the game we went to. The Bombers lit up Lansing to the tune of 22-5, and my entire family was invested in the whole game, even my three year old.
The next home game is Saturday, February 22 at the Amarillo Civic Center against Colorado. Tickets are available here, and they're only around $10 a piece. It's worth every penny.
